The food industry are modern day alchemists, turning natural foods into Frankenstein creations that live on our shelves for weeks, months, and even years at a time.  If you have eaten anything that has been put into a package be it a wrap, box, plastic, or otherwise, then it is with almost certainty we can say you have eaten at least one – or all – of the items on this list.

Aspartame/Acesulfame K (Potassium) – Still Common

If you have a sweet tooth then meet the first additive you need to avoid.  Aspartame is added to ‘sugar-free’ products to replace the sweetness we crave.  Items such as diet sodas, flavored yogurts, and protein bars use Aspartame to fill in for sugar.

However, Aspartame has a bitter aftertaste so Acesulfame K may be added to Aspartame to offset the residual taste.  What manufacturers won’t tell you is that Acesulfame K is cariogenic and Aspartame causes a variety of depression and weight gain.

Aspartame contains phenylalanine (a harmless amino acid), aspartic acid (a neurotransmitter), and methanol (a chemical that degrades into formic acid and formaldehyde at body temperature).  Formaldehyde is a compound listed as a “known human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and a “probable human carcinogen” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); it isn’t something you should put into your body, even in small amounts.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (Hfcs) – Phasing Out But May Come Back

The second food additive to avoid is High Fructose Corn Syrup.  This sweetener is favorable due to its comparative taste and composition of real sugar, but it is much cheaper to manufacture.  Many packaged foods contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, such as bread, canned vegetables, and cereal.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is incredibly dangerous because it insulin resistance, which could lead to Type 2 Diabetes, weight gain, and liver damage.  High Fructose Corn Syrup also turns off your ability to stimulate the hormone Leptin, so you do not feel full or satisfied after eating these foods.

A high fructose diet lowers HDL (good) cholesterol, raises LDL (bad) cholesterol, elevates blood pressure, and places additional stress on the kidneys.  These fatty acids accumulate in the liver setting the stage for liver disease.  Natural sources of fructose are far less concentrated than artificial sources, like HFCS.  Natural fructose is found in fruits, fruit juice, some vegetables, sugar cane, and honey.  These foods contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and healthy phytonutrients that are metabolically beneficial when consumed in moderation (1-3 servings per day).

Trans Fat – Phasing Out But Still In Many Food Sources

Trans Fat is a dangerous food additive to avoid and can be found in foods that have a greasy texture to them, such as pizza or fast food burgers.  The problem with Trans Fat is that after years of negative media coverage many people know to avoid this additive.

What they do not know, however, is that manufacturers can state that a product is ‘Trans Fat Free’ if it contains less than 0.5g of Trans Fat per serving.  While this doesn’t sound like a lot, all those small amounts in every day food items add up.   Look for doughy or ‘hydrogenated’ products especially.

Artificial Colorings – Are Everywhere!

Artificial Colorings are another well-known food additive to avoid, but can still be found in some form in almost all foods.  If your food has been processed in any way then there is a chance at least one, if not many more, Artificial Colorings have been added to the mix.

This is because manufacturers compete for best-looking foods that will grab our attention.  It isn’t enough that our food smells or tastes a certain way, it should look a certain way.  From making artificial flavoring look real to crazy neon colors, Artificial Colorings are big business.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG / E621) – In Many Foods!

Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG, is perhaps one of the most dangerous food additives to avoid on our list for one reason, MSG makes foods addictive.  If you have ever experienced a food craving, especially if you have recently eaten that food, chances are you are experiencing Monosodium Glutamate.

This additive is critical to the food industry, as they want you to enjoy your food so much that you cannot live without their product.  This is why it is so hard to go on a diet, the food cravings for MSG are extremely intense and can over-stimulate neurons.
