From their pick-me-up temptations to their diet-crushing cravings, snacks can dampen your best efforts. As snack cravings strike in a moment of weakness, the foods we reach for tend to be high in salt, sugar, and MSG; these all trigger the satisfaction button in our brains.
Choose the wrong types of snacks—that plate of chocolate chip cookies in the lunchroom—and your between meal habit could quickly sabotage your buff-to-blubber ratio. However, if you have the right snacks available you can curb cravings and have the energy you need to stay strong all day.

Frozen grapes are the perfect midsummer afternoon snack. They are sweet enough to curb even the strongest sugar craving and have the added bonus of being hydrating. Unlike regular grapes, you won’t blast through a pack of frozen grapes, but you will get that same sense of satisfaction. This is important as many fruits are high in sugar. Freezing and eating them slower will prevent you from blowing your sugar macros.
Celery and Peanut Butter
Step over PB&J, the leaner, meaner and downright delicious brother is back in town. Celery and peanut butter is a classic combo that we often forget about, but is packed with vitamin E, folate, magnesium, and potassium. If you are looking for a satisfying snack, then peanut butter (in moderation) is a great go-to that packs a punch. Celery balances this snack and prevents you from indulging in too much sugar. It also has great mouthfeel, and the fiber fills you up.
We love beef jerky for many reasons, not least of all because it is portable, pure protein, and the ideal man snack. If you tend to snack on idyll or crave flavorful snacks then jerky is for you. The protein will keep you feeling full, and at least 10g of carbohydrates per serving won’t leave you bust by dinnertime. Keep a pack in your office desk or gym pack for an easy recovery snack. Be sure to look on the back for any hidden additives or sugars, some brands do add these in.
If you want a powerful snack then try Greek yogurt. This filling treat is satisfying, has a great mouthfeel and can be dressed up to suit any flavor mood. Add salt, fruit, or nuts in moderation for a versatile treat or freeze into ‘fro-yo’ for those summer afternoons. As long as you choose a naturally low in fat Greek yogurt with no added sugar you can snack in confidence. For an extra boost, add a tablespoon of protein powder to create a supercharged power food.
Popcorn is a classic snack, but did you know this low-calorie whole grain is actually a superfood? Reach for home popped kernels and avoid adding unnecessary salt and sugar or butter. You can pop your corn with just air. When popped fresh, you can eat as is, or with a tablespoon of coconut oil for a healthy snack you won’t believe is good for you. Some snacks do taste too good to be true, but not this one. Whatever you do, make sure you bring enough for everyone!
